Origins of subliminal learning

A subliminal message is a signal or message embedded in another medium, designed to pass below the normal limits of the human mind's perception. These messages are unrecognizable by the conscious mind, but in certain situations can affect the subconscious mind and can negatively or positively influence subsequent later thoughts, behaviors, actions, attitudes, belief systems and value systems. The term subliminal means "beneath a limen" (sensory threshold). This is from the Latin words sub, meaning under, and limen, meaning threshold.

The the basic priciples of subliminal messages were first puplished in 1898 and subliminal messages have been extensively researched ever since.

During World War II, the tachistoscope, an instrument which projects pictures for an extremely brief period, was used to train soldiers to recognize enemy airplanes.Today the tachistoscope is used to increase reading speed or to test sight.

According to previously classified documents, the CIA tested subliminal manipulation in movie theaters during the late 1950's and a document on these studies speculated "that subliminal projection can be utilized in such a way as to feature visual suggestion" The extent of the CIA research is unknown.

By the late 1960's, subliminal messages had been exhaustively tested in eight areas of human behavior: dreams, memory, value norm anchor points, conscious perception verbal behavior, emotions, drives, and perceptual defenses. There is at present, no serious question that human behavior can be influenced by stimulation or information at which individuals, groups or even societies are completely unaware.

Then in the late 1970's and early 1980s, stories leaked out to the public about subliminal messages reducing shoplifting losses in retail stores across the USA, an article appeared about the use of subliminal messages in advertising.
